This Place was the Pits.

This project is about the mining village my grandfather was born and brought up in; Darngavil. It was inspired by a visit to the area with my grandfather around 13 years ago, when he took me to the location of his old school. I was fascinated as although the village had been completely destroyed evidence of its past still remained on the ground. I decided to return to Darngavil to photograph the area, only focusing on what remained on the ground to reflect on the barren moorland’s previous purpose. This project seeks to record how industrial contamination has the power to completely alter the landscape, but will never have the ability to remove the memories of the past.
